Vjosa
About
The lower Vjosa near Rromës, in the flat section where the river begins to lose momentum before the Adriatic. The channel here has spread across its flood plain into a braided system of gravel islands and shallow side branches — wide, calm, and almost completely absent of infrastructure.
It is part of the Vjosa Wild River National Park declared in 2023, and the gravel bars are open to walk along and swim from in summer, when the water drops to a manageable level. The bird life along this stretch includes kingfishers, little ringed plovers and sand martins nesting in the river banks.
There are no facilities, no marked paths and no signs. The approach is from the village of Rromës off the road south of Fier. Good for anyone who wants to see what this river is without the rafting crowds of the upper stretches.
