About

Shkodër's principal history museum occupies a nineteenth-century town house on Rruga Oso Kuka, close to the pedestrian centre. The collection runs from Illyrian and Roman finds from sites in the Shkodër region through the medieval period and into the Ottoman centuries, with an ethnographic floor showing the material life of the merchant and craftsman families who made the city prosperous.

Shkodër was the dominant commercial and cultural city of northern Albania from the eighteenth century onward, with strong ties to Venice and later to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and the museum holds the record of that world — the furniture, the dress, the tools and the documents.

The socialist realist painting collection on the upper floor is a curiosity: officially commissioned work from the communist period that oscillates between propaganda and genuine craft. Open Tuesday through Saturday, with limited Sunday hours. Closed Mondays.
