Safety and local customs
Crime, driving, hospitality norms, and what to watch for as a visitor.
Albania is generally safe for travellers. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Petty theft can happen in crowded Tirana nightlife — use normal city awareness.
Driving is the main risk: aggressive overtaking, unmarked livestock on mountain roads, and narrow passes. Drive defensively and avoid night mountain routes until you know the roads.
Hospitality is central to culture
accepting coffee or raki is a social gesture. Dress modestly in churches and mosques; beachwear stays at the beach.
Photography: ask before photographing people in rural areas. Military and some infrastructure are sensitive — if a sign says no photos, respect it.
