Money, ATMs, and tipping
Albanian Lek, where cards work, and what to budget for everyday spending.
The currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). Euros are sometimes quoted for tours and upscale hotels, but day-to-day spending is in Lek.
ATMs are widely available in cities and towns. Withdraw Lek on arrival — many rural shops and furgon drivers prefer cash. Notify your bank before travel to avoid blocked cards.
Cards are accepted at supermarkets, fuel stations, and mid-range restaurants in cities. Keep cash for markets, guesthouses, and mountain villages.
Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. Round up taxis and leave 5–10% at sit-down restaurants if service was good. Tour guides: tip at your discretion.
